Afya Jijini was a three-month (December 2020 – February 2021) project funded by USAID and PEPFAR. Under this project WASH Alliance Kenya supported COVID-19 response among communities, healthcare centers and households in four informal settlements around Nairobi – including Kibera, Korogocho, Mukuru Kwa Reuben and Mathare.
Activities
- Distribution of water filters, aqua tabs and testing kits in four Sub-counties.
- Sensitization of beneficiaries on the importance of using treated water.
- Construction of platforms and installation of water tanks at 17 healthcare centers.
- Production and distribution of IEC materials – fliers and posters.
- Undertaking water facilities repairs at the health facilities.
Achievements
- Distributed water filters and aqua tabs in Korogocho, Mathare, Mukuru and Kibra reaching 825 households. The beneficiaries were able to access clean and safe water.
- 25,000 aqua tabs were distributed to the households and public water points in Korogocho, Mathare, Mukuru kwa ruben and Kibra sub-counties to support water treatment in the areas.
- A total of 17 healthcare facilities received 5 cubic meters water tanks for storage to support consistent supply of water in the facilities and help improve sanitation and hygiene hence preventing the spread of Covid-19.
- Distributed IEC materials (fliers and posters) with messages on Covid-19 and the importance of safe water to the public to increase public knowledge on how to stay safe and also ensure change of attitude towards handwashing and other Covid-19 protocols.
- Distributed 25 water testing kits to the SCPHOs in Embakasi south (Mukuru), Kibra, Ruaraka (Korogocho) and Mathare sub-counties.
